Introducing:

The Open Commons Project

A newly launched nonprofit tech & data research lab dedicated to the development of open source & open data tools that launch into successful small-to-medium social enterprise ventures. Our mission is to R&D tools that can be incubated into social ventures in order to provide continual innovation in the nonprofit/hybrid business model space. Open Commons is grateful to be a fiscal sponsored project of the National Coalition to End Homelessness.

Open Commons Approach

The Open Commons Project is launching in Fall 2025, with gratitude to the National Coalition to End Homelessness, as a means to commence on a pair of research projects within the #Civictech, #OpenData, #OpenGov, #ESG, and #BlendedCapital spaces. Inspired by the Nick Simons Foundation & Gradian Health Systems model of creative utilization of Single Member Limited Liability Companies (SMLLCs), we aim to translate & advance an SMLLC-driven Nonprofit-Owned Social Enterprise model to find ways to collaborate, incubate, and launch technology and data solutions for social impact and increased equitable access.

Developing Open Tech/Data Solutions To Make Shared Public Resources More Accessible

Open Common Project’s mission is to R&D, contribute, steward, and launch tech/data products & services for our civic commons—making systems visible, navigable, and knowable—so that researchers, planners, advocates, CDFIs, and impact investors. We aim to create “Open Commons'“ users across a series of products that can better understand the forces shaping public life. With a passion for complex systems, network sciences, and spatial data analysis, our first social venture is launching in Fall 2025: Open.co.

What We're Building:

Open Commons Project initial focus on its first hybrid social venture will be on the specialization in aggregating and standardizing hyperlocal data.

This Project’s aim is to find utilize new Web.gl technologies to bring a new big data vending, exploring, and visualization platform that provides granular parcel-level information as an open-sourced, open-data competitor to current vendors. That’s our first product currently in R&D:
Open.co. More coming soon!
